Investing in Our Future Workforce: Why High-Quality Math Standards Matter for the Santa Maria Valley
As champions for a stronger Santa Maria Valley, the Chamber is committed to fostering a thriving, resilient community where both businesses and residents can prosper. A critical component of this mission is ensuring our local students are prepared for the demands of tomorrow’s workforce. That is why we applaud the recent action by the California State Board of Education to advance a vetted list of rigorous, high-quality mathematics materials for our classrooms.
In the Santa Maria Valley, our economic vitality relies on industries ranging from advanced agriculture and healthcare to construction and aerospace. Across these sectors, math skills are no longer just a requirement—they are an essential tool for innovation. With STEM-related careers expected to grow 3.5 times faster than other fields, equipping our youth with these skills today is the most effective way to create pathways to high-paying opportunities and long-term financial stability for our families.
For the first time in a decade, our local school districts have the opportunity to adopt updated, high-quality math materials. Research shows that implementing a curriculum aligned with state standards—while supporting our diverse multilingual learners—is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve student outcomes. By providing teachers with clear, vetted guidance, we restore confidence in our schools and ensure our education system is a true partner in building a skilled local workforce.
While the State Board has identified the best materials currently on the market, the decision to adopt them rests entirely with our local school boards. There are no state mandates or financial incentives forcing this change; it is up to us to prioritize excellence.
The Santa Maria Valley Chamber urges our local school leaders to select materials from this state-vetted list that best meet the unique needs of our community. By doing so, we work together to ensure every student in the Valley has the foundation they need to succeed in the workforce and contribute to the continued growth of our region.
